A brad nailer drives thin, small-headed fasteners for delicate trim and light joinery. A finish nailer drives a thicker nail with a slightly larger head for holding baseboard, door casing and cabinetry. A framing nailer drives long, heavy nails built to hold structural lumber together. The difference is really about how much holding force the job needs versus how visible the fastener can afford to be.
What does a brad nailer do?
A brad nailer is built for the smallest, most discreet fastening jobs in a workshop. Brad nails are a fine wire gauge with a very small head, so the hole they leave is almost invisible once filled or left bare on unpainted work.
Brad nailers are the tool of choice for attaching thin moulding, small picture frame joints, panelling, and delicate trim where a bigger nail would either split the wood or show through the surface. They hold light material in place while glue cures rather than acting as the main structural fixing.
Because the fastener is thin, a brad nailer has limited holding power on its own. It is not the right choice for anything that will carry load, take weight, or flex under use.
What is a finish nailer for?
A finish nailer sits between a brad nailer and a framing nailer. It drives a thicker nail than a brad, with more holding strength, while still leaving a smaller, easier-to-fill hole than a framing nail.
This is the tool most home workshops reach for on skirting boards, door and window casing, crown moulding, staircase parts and cabinet face frames. The fastener has enough shank thickness to grip solidly into softwood or MDF trim, and enough length to reach through the trim into the framing or substrate behind it.
Finish nailers are usually available in more than one nail length range, and some models handle a wider range than others. That range, along with the maximum material thickness the gun can comfortably drive through, is set out in the manual and on the tool itself — always check that rather than assuming one finish nailer covers every trim job in the house.
What is a framing nailer for?
A framing nailer is a structural tool. It drives long, thick nails designed to join dimensional lumber — studs, joists, sheathing, subfloor and similar framing members — with enough shear and withdrawal strength to hold a building together under load.
These guns are heavier, louder, and have a noticeably stronger recoil than brad or finish nailers, because they are moving a much larger fastener with real force. They are built for speed and repetition on framing crews, not for finesse.
Framing nailers are not appropriate for trim, furniture or anything where the fastener will be visible or where the material is thin enough to split. Using one on delicate stock is a good way to blow straight through it.

How do gauge and length actually change the job?
Gauge describes the wire thickness of the nail — a higher gauge number means a thinner nail. Brad nails run thin, finish nails are noticeably thicker, and framing nails are a different fastener category altogether, closer to a small structural fastener than a fine wire nail.
Thicker, longer nails hold better but leave a bigger, harder-to-hide mark and are more likely to split thin or brittle material. Thinner, shorter nails disappear neatly but cannot be relied on to carry weight or resist being pulled apart.
This is why the three tool classes exist as separate products rather than one adjustable gun: the fastener geometry, the magazine, the driving force and even the nose design are all built around one type of nail doing one type of job. A specific model’s rated nail length and gauge range is printed in its manual — that is what determines which fasteners are safe and effective to load, not a general rule of thumb.
Pneumatic, cordless gas or battery — does the power source matter here?
Nail guns come as pneumatic tools that run off an air compressor, self-contained cordless tools using a battery and small fuel cell, or fully battery-driven models with a spring or flywheel mechanism. The power source changes convenience and setup, not which nail category the gun is built to drive.
A pneumatic gun needs a compressor and hose, which limits where it can go but tends to keep the tool itself lighter and simpler. A cordless gun is free to move around a site but relies on a battery being charged and, in gas-powered designs, a fuel cell being replaced.

What PPE and safety points matter with nail guns?
Eye protection is non-negotiable with any nail gun. A misfire, a nail that deflects off a knot, or a piece of debris kicked up on contact can travel fast and land in an unprotected eye in an instant.
Hearing protection matters too, particularly with framing nailers and with any pneumatic gun run off a compressor in an enclosed space — the discharge and the compressor motor together add up to sustained, loud noise over a working session.
A nail gun should always be pointed away from hands, feet and bystanders, kept off the trigger until it is actually pressed against the work, and never carried or handed to someone else with a finger near the trigger. How do you choose between them for a home workshop?
The starting question is simple: what is the fastener actually holding, and does it need to be invisible, discreet, or structurally strong? That single question rules out two of the three categories for almost any given job.
- Small, delicate trim, panelling or picture framing where the fixing barely needs to hold anything on its own — a brad nailer.
- Skirting, architrave, door and window casing, cabinet face frames, and similar interior trim — a finish nailer.
- Structural framing, subfloor, sheathing and anything load-bearing on a building — a framing nailer, and work of this kind should be planned with, or carried out by, someone qualified in structural carpentry.
A single home workshop rarely needs all three.
