What Should Be in a Workshop First Aid Kit?

A workshop first aid kit needs to cover cuts, splinters, burns and eye contamination — the injuries hand tools and power tools actually cause — not just the plasters and antiseptic wipes in a household kit. It also needs to be somewhere everyone in the workshop can find it without searching.

What actually goes in a workshop first aid kit?

A workshop kit is built around the injuries a workshop produces: cuts from blades and chisels, splinters, abrasions from sanding or grinding, small burns from hot metal or a glue gun, and dust or debris in the eye. The basic contents cover all of those, plus enough gloves and wipes to treat someone safely.

  • Assorted plasters and low-adherent dressings for small cuts and abrasions
  • Sterile gauze pads and a couple of larger wound dressings for deeper cuts
  • A conforming bandage or two, to hold a dressing under pressure
  • Adhesive tape
  • Disposable nitrile gloves, several pairs
  • Fine-point tweezers for splinters and metal slivers
  • Sterile eye wash solution or a sealed eye wash pod
  • A burns dressing (hydrogel or similar, designed to be left on and not removed)
  • Antiseptic wipes for cleaning skin around a wound, not inside it
  • A pair of small, blunt-nosed scissors or a dedicated dressing scissors
  • A foil emergency blanket
  • A card or note with the workshop’s location details, useful if someone else has to call for help

Why isn’t a household first aid kit enough?

A household kit is built for grazed knees and kitchen nicks. A workshop produces a different pattern of injury: deeper cuts from sharp edges, embedded splinters and metal filings, dust and grit thrown into the eye, and occasional burns from hot metal, glue guns or a tool that has been running hard.

The volume of dressing material matters too. A single small plaster does very little for a cut from a chisel or a saw blade. A workshop kit needs enough gauze and bandage to apply real pressure and hold it in place until the bleeding is controlled or help arrives.

What should be there for eye injuries?

An eye injury in a workshop is usually dust, a wood chip, a metal filing or a splash of something caustic — not a scratch that will heal on its own. The kit needs sterile eye wash that can flush the eye immediately, and the injured person should not rub it.

Sealed, single-use eye wash pods are easier to use one-handed than a bottle, and they don’t dry out or contaminate between uses the way an opened bottle can. If grit or a shaving is visible and won’t flush out, or if vision is affected at all, that is a case for medical attention rather than a first aid kit.

What about splinters and embedded debris?

A splinter or a piece of swarf under the skin needs to come out cleanly, not be dug at with whatever is nearest. Fine-point tweezers, cleaned before and after use, are the right tool. Antiseptic cleaning of the surrounding skin afterwards reduces the chance of infection.

Deep or dirty splinters — especially ones broken off under the skin — are better left to a pharmacist or a doctor than worked at with a kit. Metal filings and grinding debris in particular can carry rust or coating residue that makes a wound worse if it’s not cleaned properly.

Does a workshop kit need anything for burns?

Yes. Hot metal off a grinder, a glue gun, a soldering iron or a tool that’s been run hard all produce small burns, and the first response matters more than any dressing: cool the area with running water for a sustained period before anything else happens.

Once cooled, a hydrogel burns dressing can be applied and left in place — burns should not be covered with cotton wool, ice, or anything that will stick to the wound. Anything beyond a small, superficial burn is a matter for medical attention, not the kit.

Should the kit cover dust and fumes?

A first aid kit is not a substitute for keeping fine dust and fumes out of the air in the first place, but it should include eye wash for dust exposure and the basics for treating minor skin irritation from resins, finishes or dust.

Somewhere fixed, visible, and reachable without moving anything — not in a drawer under offcuts, and not shared with general storage that gets rummaged through for other reasons. Everyone who uses the workshop should know the exact spot without being told twice.

A dedicated wall bracket or a clearly labelled box works better than a loose bag on a shelf. How often should the kit be checked?

Regularly enough that nothing inside it has expired or been used up without being replaced. Dressings, eye wash and antiseptic wipes all have a shelf life, and a kit that’s been dipped into after a previous injury is often missing exactly the item needed next time.

What reduces the chance of ever needing the kit?

Most workshop injuries trace back to a small number of causes: a workpiece unsupported by hand near a blade, loose clothing near a rotating chuck, a guard or safety feature left doing its job without being understood, or dust and noise exposure that builds up quietly over time.
