A riving knife is the thin, curved metal plate fitted directly behind a table saw blade, rising and falling with it. Its job is to hold the freshly cut kerf open so the timber cannot pinch the blade from behind. Without it, a saw has no protection against the most common cause of kickback.

A featherboard adds a third layer for some cuts, holding the workpiece consistently against the fence or table so it cannot wander into the blade.
