What Does an FFP or N95 Rating Actually Cover?

An FFP or N95 rating tells you how well a mask filters airborne particles — dust, mist and similar solid or liquid droplets — and roughly what proportion of them it is required to stop in a standard test. It says nothing about fit on your specific face, comfort, reuse, or protection from gases, vapours or fumes.

What do the letters and numbers actually mean?

FFP (Filtering Facepiece Particle) is the European classification system; N95, N99 and N100 come from the American NIOSH system. Both describe the same basic idea: a mask made from filtering material, tested to show it removes a minimum proportion of very small airborne particles when air is drawn through it.

The number is a filtration threshold set by the testing standard, not a marketing claim from the manufacturer. Under the relevant standards:

  • FFP1 and similarly low-tier masks filter the smallest proportion of particles of the disposable range, and are mainly aimed at nuisance dust rather than fine wood or mineral dust.
  • FFP2 and N95 are treated as broadly comparable, and are the level most commonly recommended for fine wood dust, MDF dust and general workshop particulates.
  • FFP3, N99 and N100 sit higher again, aimed at the finest and most hazardous particulates, including materials like silica dust.

What is the real difference between FFP2 and N95?

FFP2 and N95 are not identical standards, but for a home workshop the practical difference is small. Both are aimed at the same job: filtering fine particulate matter at a similar rough level of efficiency, tested with a slightly different protocol and paperwork trail.

Neither is “better” in a way that matters for typical sanding or cutting dust. What matters more is whether the mask you are holding is a genuine certified product, whether it fits your face, and whether you are using the right category of protection for the dust you are actually making.

What does the rating NOT cover?

This is the part that trips people up. An FFP or N95 rating is a statement about particulate filtration only. It does not mean the mask:

  • Blocks gases, solvent vapours, or fumes — from finishes, adhesives, paint strippers, or anything that off-gasses. That needs a different category of respirator entirely, with a gas/vapour cartridge, not a filtering facepiece.
  • Forms an automatic seal on your particular face shape. The rating is achieved in a lab fit test rig, not on you.
  • Stays effective indefinitely. Dust loading, moisture from breathing, and a crushed or bent nose clip all degrade performance well before the mask looks obviously dirty.
  • Protects against very fine combustion fumes, welding fume, or oil mist in the way a proper respirator system does.

Does the rating guarantee a good seal on your face?

No. A mask can carry the correct FFP2 or N95 rating and still leak badly around the nose bridge, cheeks or chin if it is the wrong size or shape for the wearer, or if facial hair breaks the seal line.

A rating describes what the filter material can do when air is forced through it properly, not what happens when air instead slips around the edges unfiltered. This is why fit — checking the nose clip is moulded down properly, the straps are snug, and there is no visible gap — matters as much as the number printed on the mask.

Glasses fogging up is a rough but useful sign of a poor seal: air is escaping upward past the nose rather than passing through the filter.

When would FFP3 or N99/N100 actually be needed?

Higher-tier masks matter most where the dust itself is finer or more hazardous — cutting or grinding materials that produce very fine mineral dust, for example, or situations where dust exposure is heavy and sustained rather than occasional.

Does a valve change what the rating covers?

An exhalation valve on a mask makes breathing out easier and reduces heat and moisture build-up inside the mask. It does not change the filtration rating of the material the mask is made from, and it does not filter what you breathe out any better than an unvalved mask — the valve is simply a one-way flap for exhaled air.

Valved masks are a comfort feature for the wearer during longer sessions, not a difference in the protection standard being met.

How does this fit with dust extraction at the tool itself?

A respirator rating is a last line of defence, not a substitute for reducing how much dust becomes airborne in the first place. Rather than chasing the highest number available, it helps to compare a few practical things:

  • Whether the mask is a genuine certified product from a traceable source, with the standard and rating printed on the mask or packaging, not just a vague “dust mask” description.
  • Fit range and nose clip design — a mask that does not seal to your face is not delivering its rated protection regardless of the number on the box.
  • Whether the task involves particulate dust (where FFP/N95-type masks apply) or vapours and fumes from finishes and solvents (where a different respirator category is needed).
  • Comfort and breathability for the length of session actually planned, since a mask that gets pushed aside part-way through a job is providing no protection at all.
