A plumb bob is a pointed weight hung on a string that uses gravity to find a perfectly vertical line. It has no batteries, no electronics and nothing to calibrate. Plenty of tradespeople and hobbyists still use one, mostly as a quick, reliable check when a laser or spirit level can’t be trusted or can’t reach.
What exactly is a plumb bob?
A plumb bob is a small, symmetrical weight, usually shaped like a teardrop or spinning top, with a fine point at the bottom and a loop or swivel at the top for a string or cord. That’s the entire tool. The weight might be brass, steel or a dense synthetic material, but the working principle doesn’t change: hang it freely and it settles pointing straight down, at right angles to the ground, every single time.
The word “plumb” comes from the Latin for lead, “plumbum”, because early bobs were cast from lead. Builders have used the same basic idea for thousands of years — Egyptian and Roman construction relied on plumb lines long before anyone had a level with a bubble in it, let alone a laser.
How does a plumb bob actually work?
It works because gravity pulls straight down toward the centre of the earth, and a freely hanging weight has nothing stopping it from aligning with that pull. Once the string stops swinging, the line from the suspension point to the tip of the bob is true vertical, regardless of how uneven the floor or wall around it might be.
There’s no sensor, no bubble and no battery to drift out of calibration. The only things that can throw off a reading are things that interfere with the swing itself — draughts, the bob brushing against something, or the person holding it not holding it still.
What is a plumb bob used for today?
The plumb bob’s core job is simple: telling you whether something is truly vertical, or marking a point directly above or below another point. That covers a surprising range of everyday tasks.
- Checking that a door frame, stud wall or fence post is standing truly upright before it’s fixed in place.
- Transferring a point from a ceiling to a floor, or vice versa, when running a line, a pendant light fixing or a partition wall.
- Centring a tripod-mounted instrument, such as a surveyor’s level, directly over a ground marker.
- Hanging wallpaper straight, especially the first drop in a room, where everything after it lines up from that one vertical reference.
- Setting fence posts, gate posts or garden structures upright without relying on a level that can be knocked out of true.
Plumb bobs are also still taught and used in surveying, masonry and some rigging trades, precisely because they don’t rely on anything that can be dropped, knocked or run flat.
Has anything replaced the plumb bob?
Laser levels and self-levelling laser lines have taken over a lot of the plumb bob’s traditional work, and for good reason: they’re faster, they project a continuous line rather than a single point, and they don’t need a clear drop with nothing in the way. For projecting a vertical or horizontal reference across a room, a laser is usually the more practical choice.
But lasers have real limits. Bright sunlight can wash out the beam, batteries run flat, and a laser needs to be sat on a level surface or a stable stand to give a trustworthy reading. A plumb bob doesn’t care about ambient light and doesn’t need power — it only needs somewhere to hang and enough time for the swing to settle. What should you look for when choosing a plumb bob?
A plumb bob is a simple tool, but a few features genuinely change how usable it is:
- Weight. A heavier bob settles faster and resists draughts better, but it’s also harder to hold steady by hand over a long drop. Lighter bobs suit shorter, indoor work.
- Point shape. A fine, replaceable or hardened point gives a more precise reading against a mark, and holds up better if it’s used against masonry or concrete repeatedly.
- Swivel. A bob with a swivel at the top hangs more freely and settles into true vertical faster than one where the string is simply tied on, because the string itself doesn’t have to untwist first.
- Line and reel. Some bobs come with a reel or case holding a set length of cord. A reel keeps the line clean and untangled, which matters more than it sounds once the cord has been used a few times.

How do you use a plumb bob correctly?
The method hasn’t changed since it was first used: hang the bob, let it stop moving, then read the line.
- Fix the top of the string at the point you’re measuring from, whether that’s a nail, a hook, or held steady by hand.
- Let the bob hang freely with nothing touching it — no walls, no tools, no leaning against the workpiece.
- Wait for the swing to fully settle. This is the step most often rushed, and it’s the one that matters most.
- Read the position of the tip, or mark where it hangs, once it’s completely still.
For checking a wall or post is vertical, the bob is usually hung close beside the surface rather than touching it, and the gap between the string and the surface is compared at the top and the bottom. If the gap is even, the surface is plumb.

What are the limits of a plumb bob?
A plumb bob only tells you about vertical. It doesn’t measure distance, doesn’t project a horizontal line, and doesn’t help at all if there’s no clear space for the string to hang — awkward for ceiling-height work in a cramped stairwell, for instance.
Wind and draughts are the main practical enemy outdoors, since even a light breeze keeps the string swinging and delays a settled reading. Indoors, the biggest source of error is usually impatience: reading the bob’s position before it has actually stopped moving.

Is a plumb bob worth having in a home workshop?
For most home workshops, yes, mainly because it’s cheap, needs no maintenance and never runs out of charge. It earns its place as a backup for door frames, fence posts and the odd ceiling-to-floor transfer, sitting alongside — not instead of — a decent level or laser.
