A strop is a strip or pad of leather, fabric or hard felt, usually loaded with a fine abrasive compound, used to polish and realign a cutting edge after sharpening. It does not remove metal the way a stone does — it refines the edge a stone leaves behind, and it wipes away the microscopic wire of metal that sharpening turns up.
What does a strop actually remove?
Almost nothing, in terms of steel. A strop’s job is to burnish the very last few microns of an edge, smoothing out the fine scratch pattern left by your finest sharpening stone and knocking off the “wire edge” or “burr” that forms during honing.
When you sharpen on a stone, metal is pushed and dragged along the edge rather than cleanly sliced away. That creates a thin, ragged flap of steel — the burr — which can fold over rather than actually being part of the cutting edge. A strop, especially one loaded with a very fine abrasive compound, cuts that burr off or folds it away cleanly and polishes the two faces that meet at the edge so they meet as smoothly as possible.
Is stropping the same as sharpening?
No. Sharpening changes the geometry of an edge by grinding a new bevel; stropping only refines an edge that is already close to correct. Stropping cannot fix a rounded, chipped or badly angled bevel.

What is a strop made of?
Most strops are leather, often with the smooth (grain) side used for the final pass, sometimes backed onto a wooden paddle or bench-mounted board. Some are canvas, denim or hard felt instead, and each surface behaves slightly differently.
- Leather: Slightly yielding, which lets it follow the curve of a rounded bevel — good for general edge polishing on chisels, plane irons and knives.
- Hard felt or MDF paddles: Firmer and flatter, which some sharpeners prefer for keeping a very consistent, flat bevel on chisels and plane irons.
- Canvas or denim: Often used as a coarser first pass before moving to leather, particularly for knives.
The surface itself does very little without an abrasive loaded into or onto it — the strop is really a carrier for compound, not an abrasive in its own right.
What is honing compound and how fine is it?
Honing or stropping compound is a wax-based paste containing very fine abrasive particles — commonly chromium oxide (green), aluminium oxide (white) or a diamond paste in various grades. It’s rubbed into the strop’s surface and does the actual polishing.
These compounds sit at the very fine end of what a stone can offer, and often finer. Manufacturers grade compounds loosely by colour or micron rating rather than a single agreed system, and coarseness varies between brands. Rather than chasing a specific number, most sharpeners keep one medium compound for general work and add a finer one only if they want a mirror finish for something like a straight razor or a fine paring chisel.
Which tools actually benefit from stropping?
Stropping helps any edge tool that relies on a fine, continuous cutting edge rather than a row of teeth. It has little to offer a saw blade or a drill bit, where the cutting action and the way dullness develops are completely different.

How often should a blade be stropped?
There’s no fixed schedule — the honest answer is “whenever the edge starts to feel like it’s dragging rather than slicing, but before it’s actually dull.” For chisels and plane irons in regular use, that can mean a few passes on the strop every session or two, long before a full trip back to the stones is needed.
Treating stropping as routine maintenance rather than a rescue step is the more useful habit. A tool that gets stropped regularly needs full resharpening far less often, because the edge is being kept clean and polished rather than being allowed to degrade to the point where it needs to be reground.
Does a strop work on every kind of steel?
Broadly yes, though very hard steels and heavily alloyed blades take longer to see a visible improvement from stropping and may need a slightly more aggressive compound to make progress in a reasonable number of strokes. Softer carbon steels respond quickly and can be over-polished if you’re not paying attention to what the bevel is doing.
What matters more than the steel itself is technique: keeping the same angle on every stroke, drawing the edge away from itself (never digging in), and not pressing so hard that the strop’s surface deforms and rounds the bevel over. What can go wrong when stropping?
The two common mistakes are rounding the edge over through inconsistent angle, and expecting a strop to fix a problem it can’t. Both are avoidable with a slow, deliberate technique and a realistic sense of what the tool needs.
- Rounding the bevel: Lifting the blade slightly on each stroke, rather than holding one angle, gradually turns a crisp bevel into a rounded one that no longer cuts cleanly.
- Cutting into the strop: Pushing the edge forward into the leather (rather than trailing it) can slice into the surface and, on a knife or razor, is a real cut hazard to fingers holding the strop steady — always draw the edge away from the cutting direction.
- Treating stropping as a substitute for sharpening: If an edge is genuinely dull, chipped, or the bevel has gone out of shape, stropping will polish a poor edge rather than fix it.
Because stropping puts a bare edge close to the hand holding the strop, basic eye protection is still worth having on the bench, and it’s worth keeping fingers well clear of the direction the edge travels — the same caution that applies to any sharp hand tool.
Do you need a strop, or is a fine stone enough?
A very fine finishing stone can get an edge most of the way there on its own, and plenty of woodworkers sharpen without ever owning a dedicated strop. A strop is a low-cost way to extend the life of a good edge and reduce how often full sharpening is needed, rather than an essential piece of equipment.
